Gay Bahamas – Ultimate Travel Guide, Hotels, Restaurants, Bars & Activities (Updated 2024)

Gay Bahamas is a republic located in the Atlantic Ocean (West Indies). This group of 700 islands, with its almost ideal all-year-round weather, is a very popular tourist destination, and a favourite location for celebrities and business tycoons to have a holiday home.

Within close proximity to trendy Nassau, visitors are able to marvel at the enormous mangroves of Andros and discover a range of beaches, reefs, woods, and historic villages. If you choose to stay at one of the many resorts, your choice of leisure activities is almost endless.

You can take a walk on the white and pink sandy beaches; dive and snorkel in underground limestone caves; kayak in the ocean; swim with pigs; eat delicious seafood, or simply relax and take in the breathtaking sights.

The islands of the Gay Bahamas are a popular destination for weddings, fiestas, parties, honeymoons, and family vacations.

Safety, however, is paramount when traveling as a gay couple or on your own. Although the Gay Bahamas does not yet have adequate anti-discrimination laws to provide protection for LGBTQ+ residents and visitors alike, the country and its people are welcoming of diversity and inclusion.

Changing hearts and minds may not happen overnight BUT it will happen.

More and more of the world’s population have commenced their travel itineraries again, and with this comes a higher degree of diligence and awareness.

Please check out the places in our Gay Travel Guides and know that the information is as accurate as possible and the research that went into each destination’s page was thorough. It is always a good idea however to make sure you know what the very latest rules and regulations are before you travel.

The Gay Bahamas Gay Scene

Although progress is being made, it’s prudent to remember the less-than-welcoming history the Bahamas has had in regard to the LGBTQ+ communities.

Although LGBTQ+ activists have taken on the battle, Legal recognition of homosexuality has not yet been achieved, resulting in the complete absence of gay clubs, venues, events, and public displays of affection.

This has forced the inevitable to happen: any gay-friendly venue and the gay scene, in general, is underground. As difficult as this is to imagine in 2023, those members of the LGBTQ+ communities are still ‘in the closet’.

The love is not entirely lost though – major resorts and hotels now openly welcome people from all colors of the rainbow, and despite the pitfalls, the Bahamas’ natural beauty has elevated it to be one of the Caribbean’s top LGBTQ+ holiday destinations.

The underground gay scene in Nassau boasts several gay-friendly establishments and the beach at the Westend Esplanade, with an all-male Turkish bath on the premises, is popular with LGBTQ+ visitors.

Is The Bahamas LGBTQ+ Safe?

The often-heard warning to ‘be alert but not alarmed’ applies in this case. With its high murder rate, it isn’t the safest place to visit but with an appropriate amount of caution and common sense, you should be fine.

Exercise extreme caution on public transport and taxi drivers may try to overcharge you.

Best Time to Visit The Gay Bahamas

The Gay Bahamas peak season, from mid-December to mid-April, is the best time to visit. The winter months are the busiest in the country. Many hotels and resorts, particularly popular ones like Atlantis and Paradise Island, are fully booked months in advance.

The season’s moderate daytime temperatures, ranging in the high 70s to low 80s, and clear skies make these months excellent for snorkeling or diving, sunbathing on beautiful Bahamian beaches, and exploring outdoor oases like Lucayan National Park and The Glass Window Bridge.

Just keep in mind that crowds will be heavier during the Junkanoo Festival and around March spring break, so make sure to plan ahead.

The best time to visit the Gay Bahamas is from late April to early December if you want to keep your travel expenses as low as possible. The finest hotel rates, which are up to 60% off, are available between late April and early December when crowds at top attractions are substantially thinner.

Many Bahamian homes schedule maintenance during these months though, so the noise of construction increases exponentially and the services decrease at an equal pace.

The wettest months of the year are May through October, and storms may make landfall between June and November.
